Nice To Know I Have Visitors; John Mellencamp - Freedom's Road

It's been very nice to know that even during my self-imposed moratorium on posts here at the GMA that some people have still be visiting, some for the first time. I wanted to thank my new friend Wendy from Hollywood who dropped by and thought enough of the page to send me a freebie copy of John Mellencamp's Freedom's Road. I checked out her page and doing publicity for bands and artists is what she does and what she has done for over a decade. It was an incredibly friendly gesture, especially since I don't solicit recordings from labels, artists, or anyone. Anyone who wants to help feed my appetite for music is a friend of mine. Thanks, Wendy!

And as for the Mellencamp? I've really enjoyed what I've heard so far. Having grown up a stone's throw away from Hoosier country, I've always had the taste of folk/country on my musical tongue. His take on the state of affairs here in the USA is a rather gloomy one, addressing the death of small town America (Ghost Towns Along The Highway), the Bush administration (Freedom's Road), or the still-sad state of race relations (Jim Crow). Being the positive soul I am, I'm most drawn to Someday, a catchy pop-country ballad about the hope our brotherhood of man will overcome prejudice, apathy and hatred. Mellencamp's band has never sounded better either, with his fiddle and accordion-laced sound. It's worth a listen, considering Mellencamp himself admits it's the first album he's really tried to make good in over a decade.

Reminder: Song links take you to the iTunes music store where you can listen to 30 second samples of any song. iTunes is required (but free), and you can download it at apple.com. If you're not an iTunes person, I'd also recommend sampling from Amazon.com, but not all Amazon listings have listening samples.
