Are The Arts Important To You?

Are the arts important to you? Is music an essential part of your life? Do you feel that your involvement in music in your school days was just as important as your academic pursuits? Do you believe you are a better student, citizen, and person due to your participation in musical performing groups while in high school? Do you feel that the arts are an essential part of a quality education and should not take a back seat or reduced role because politicians say that reading, writing, math, science, and social studies are much more important?

If you so believe, would you be willing to defend your position if called upon?

I'll keep you posted.

yes the arts are very important to me. i feel that im some ways that music is more important then some things that i am required to learn in school. i mean unless i plan on going into a field that requires a lot of math when will i ever apply most of the things that i have learned over the past 3 years? i feel that i have become the person that i am today beacuse of my involvement in such things as marching band concert band pep band and choir. these activities helped me make friends when i came to Fairbanks as a new student. I have memories form these that i wil keep with me for a lifetime. in 20 years i will not remember what equation i need to solve what problem, but i will remember all the fun times and things that i have learned while participating in my chosen arts. fi we as young people are not exposed to the arts during out "impressional" years then we may never be. i feel that in some ways that the arts are more important then acedemics. those classes do not teach you lessons that you can take with you and use later in life. and if i had to defend my position then yes i will no matter what the repercussions would be. i love band and i never regret joining it but i do regret that i had to spend so much of my time wasted learning about things that i dont really care about or that i can ever use again.

Band and chior have helped so much in my life. I am a better person and I have made so many friends, and it is like learning a different language, the language of music. People say that the Faribanks Marching Band is the Pride of Fairbanks and it is an honor to be one of the individules to be part of that pride. Iuse band and choir to gat the tension and pressure of all my school classes by being who I am and enjoying what I do.

In my opinion, band is MORE important than any academic courses that I am taking, because MUSIC is what I LOVE!
Without band, the school day would just plain SUCK, and I plan on taking this to a future career!

Anyone that says that music and arts are not as important as your general academic classes is a jerk, and has probably never known what it's like to be part of such a wonderful experience.

Maybe they just dont care.

Maybe they're jealous. there could be a lot going on that makes them hate music and arts.

I was new during freshman year, and most of the friends that I made in the new school district were BAND members, and it wasnt just because I met them through band because we were in it together, but it was more because we had some common interests.

My best friends are involved in the music department and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

Besides, I agree with Katie. when will I ever apply what I learned in algebra two, solving linear systems and matrices, into everyday life?

NEVER.

Music, I apply to my life EVERYDAY.

I play music when I wake up, I play an instrument every day (sometimes two instruments), I listen to music on the bus, I was in choir for awhile...

Music is my life, and it deserves SHOTGUN.

IT WILL NEVER TAKE BACK SEAT IN MY BOOK, AND IF IT IS GIVEN A REDUCED ROLE, I WILL FIGHT FOR IT WITH EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE.

I WOULD LOVE TO DEFEND MY POSITION IF CALLED UPON.

Why wouldnt I defend what I love?

Are academics more important than arts? Visit this link. The "experts" that we trust so dearly believe that this may not be true.

crap, nevermind, bad link....basically the experts say that people involved in music at a younger age make more money and have fuller lives...do we need to be told that?

Yeah, of course music matters to me. As a matter of fact, I would probably be in Marysville this year if I didn't like band so much. I had the chance to go to Marysville where my grades would have looked much nicer, there are more classes, and all of them are easier to pass in. But, being a band member there is being another brick in the wall. Here music is more personal. Were it not for that and the friends I have made, I would not continue my education at Fairbanks.

I deffinately believe that arts are just as important, or even more importment in the lives of our generation, and for generations to come. The arts teach you how to express yourself, but I forgot thats not what the government wants for us.

Yes, they say they want us to be indiviuals, and original, but in all reality they just want us to have better test scores than the japps.....WHO CARES!!!!!

Everyday I see more and more conformity.....everyone talks, thinks, looks and acts exactly the same way, and that is exactly what the government wants, they want us to be test taking mahines and they don't care what happens to our personalities in the process.

The arts, keep us original, it teaches us to think differently and to have a better understanding about the world around us. Music and art give us imagination.....tests......not so much.....I'm pretty sure they rot your brain.

Thats just a thought and my stance on the whole thing.....

love you all!!!

without music, i would be lost. being in band here at fairbanks has given me challenge and reward. mr. keller, i wouldn't be the person i am today if i didn't have you to thank as a teacher. thanks to all your dedication to me as a student and the music department as a whole, i have developed a passion that has consumed me and it's amazing!! i'm so excited to make music my life in a performance career, but i will never forget the band and the director that i owe everything to!! thanks mr. k!! i won't leave seeing the teacher and the department that i credit with much of my success being treated unfairly.

The arts serve to remind people what's really important in life ... feeling! Can't live without em.

Or, you could. But I wouldn't want to.
